This is volunteer post and the postholder will be responsible to the Board of Trustees of the Greyfriars Charteris Centre, working closely with the Centre Manager

To develop artistic initiatives in the refurbished Charteris Centre building to complement, support and enhance the activities of its users

BACKGROUND 

Greyfriars Charteris Centre is a Centre for Community based in its newly refurbished home at 138/140 The Pleasance, EH8 9RR. Out of the former Kirk o’ Field church and adjacent St Ninian’s Centre we have created an inspirational environment to support communities of faith, need and interest, with themes of well-being and social enterprise. Led by Greyfriars Kirk our principal partners include University of Edinburgh, Edinburgh Social Enterprise), and a counselling service (CoCo Counselling).

 

We are now seeking to further support our partners and users of the Centre through arts based methodologies to foster engagement and creativity between and among them, including but not limited to visual art.

 

 

MAIN DUTIES 

  • Establish connections with and between Charteris centre users, commercial sponsors, Edinburgh College of Art and others

  • source and curate art installations in the newly refurbished building

  • Advise on arts opportunities currently available through the Centre (eg Heart for Art)

  • extend the programme of arts opportunities to a wider community in the city centre, including students and adults.

  • Build on existing links and relationships with Greyfriars Kirk, The Grassmarket Community Project, Edinburgh University, Edinburgh Social Enterprise and CoCo counselling. 

 

Additional Duties

  • To communicate to the Board of Trustees and the Charteris Ministry Team information and vision for the work at least half yearly

  • To attend conferences and events

  • To contribute appropriately to the annual Report

 

PERSON SPECIFICATION

This is a new post which may appeal to an experienced person wishing to volunteer their expertise for the benefit of the community, or to a newly qualified person looking to establish a portfolio of experience. 

 

Ability to develop an arts methodology to foster community and creativity with and for Charteris partners and user groups.

 

Ability to work effectively and positively contribute to team working with a wide range of community organisations and Charteris Centre users.

 

A commitment to partnership working, maintaining and developing links with Greyfriars Kirk, churches of other denominations and with other faith communities.

 

It is essential that the postholder is able to work alongside the Centre Manager, with minimal supervision and to offer professional advice sensitive to the values and ethos of the Greyfriars Charteris Centre.

 

TERMS AND CONDITIONS

 

Benefits:

This a voluntary position without remuneration. However, all travelling and other agreed expenses incurred will be re-imbursed.

 

The postholder will benefit from opportunities to work collaboratively with an extensive network of contacts operating at a strategic level in sectors such as: charities and faith communities, the Church of Scotland in particular, Edinburgh University, leaders of community organisations and professionals in health and wellbeing. 

 

Hours: 

The postholder will be invited to attend Charteris Team meetings from time to time on Thursday mornings. Other hours may be worked flexibly to suit the needs of the post and the postholder. It is anticipated that this will be equivalent to around one or two days a week in the initial period.
